Ce tableau explore le regard et la perception à travers des portraits juxtaposés. Les figures existent par leur apparence, leur posture et leur maquillage. Elles ne racontent pas une histoire précise, mais renvoient à la tension entre ce que nous montrons et ce que nous sommes. Comme dans le catch, tout y est joué et réel, produisant un effet émotionnel immédiat.

Ces portraits surgissent de ma mémoire de manière très directe, presque inconsciente. Ils ne sont pas prémédités : ils apparaissent dans le geste même de peindre. À mesure que le travail avance, c’est la peinture qui prend le relais, qui guide les formes et les regards. Le tableau devient alors un espace où ces figures se révèlent d’elles-mêmes, entre souvenir, intuition et apparition.

This painting explores gaze and perception through juxtaposed portraits. The figures exist through their appearance, their posture, and their makeup. They do not tell a specific story, but rather point to the tension between what we show and what we are. As in wrestling, everything is both staged and real, producing an immediate emotional effect.

These portraits emerge from my memory in a very direct, almost unconscious way. They are not premeditated; they appear through the very act of painting. As the work progresses, the painting itself takes over, guiding the forms and the gazes. The canvas then becomes a space where these figures reveal themselves, somewhere between memory, intuition, and apparition.

Ce tableau évoque la fugacité de la vie. Il invite à méditer sur notre existence et à contempler ce crâne silencieux, surmonté d’une forme en apesanteur symbolisant la question. Chaque instant devient un tableau. Les lustres évoquent des présences disparues, comme des lumières suspendues dans la mémoire.

This painting evokes the fleeting nature of life. It invites reflection on our existence and contemplation of the silent skull, topped by a weightless form symbolizing the question. Every moment becomes a painting. The chandeliers evoke vanished presences, like lights suspended in memory.

Le visage, entièrement noir, sans traits définis, reste ouvert, laissant place à une projection possible.

Posé sur une forme ovoïde instable, le personnage tient une chaise. Le portrait de Mao y apparaît comme un dossier. Cette image, autrefois fortement idéologique, est ici déplacée, presque vidée de sa charge, devenue une forme visuelle, proche d’un motif ou d’une couleur.

The face, entirely black and without defined features, remains open, allowing space for projection.

Resting on an unstable, ovoid form, the figure holds a chair. Mao’s portrait appears as its backrest. Once strongly ideological, this image is displaced here, almost emptied of its charge, becoming a visual form, close to a motif or a colour.

Peint en un seul jet « alla prima », ce tableau s’inspire de l’urgence du geste que j’ai observée dans les études de Francis Bacon sur Van Gogh. Le chiffre 11, qui m’accompagne depuis longtemps, symbolise un repère personnel et un moment marquant. Ce tableau se lit comme un autoportrait.

Painted in a single, uninterrupted gesture, “alla prima,” this painting is inspired by the urgency of movement I observed in Francis Bacon’s studies after Van Gogh. The number 11, which has accompanied me for a long time, symbolizes a personal reference point and a significant moment. This painting can be read as a self-portrait.

J’ai commencé ce tableau en 2012 à Auckland, Nouvelle-Zélande, et je ne l’ai repris que 13 ans plus tard. Ne l’ayant pas vu pendant tout ce temps, mon regard avait changé et j’ai ressenti qu’il fallait intervenir dessus pour l’achever.

I began this painting in 2012 in Auckland, New Zealand, and only returned to it 13 years later. Having not seen it all that time, my perspective had evolved, and I felt it needed my intervention to be completed.

Au-dessus du Christ de Saint Jean de la croix, le peintre Dali suggérait un regard possible. Au-dessus du parachutiste Félix Baumgartner, sautant dans la stratosphère, Manu Perez place une caméra. « Cet homme m'intéresse parce qu'il est seul face à l'humanité. Là il y a un rapport très pictural, il va quand même rejoindre son ombre et rejoindre son humanité ». Citant Deleuze encore : « Je crois que l'un des motifs de l'art et de la pensée, c'est la honte d'être un homme. »

« Nous sommes un peu dans la même élasticité que cet homme d'en haut. Il saute pour rejoindre sa nature humaine, et le faisant nous parle d'autre chose. »

Ce qui me frappe dans les jardins publics, ce sont les couleurs disposées autour des poubelles pleines. Des couleurs en plastique, posées là comme si quelqu’un cherchait à faire un tableau.

What strikes me in public gardens are the colors arranged around the overflowing trash bins. Plastic colors, placed as if someone were trying to make a painting.
